The age of gigantic battleships and big guns were already gone at that time, yet stupid Japanese were making two gigantic battleships. One battleship was used at the end of war. That was her virgin voyage, but it turned to a funeral ship. Only few realised the war in battleship was already obsolete. The very person who devised the operation Pearl Harbour developed the new 97 fighter whose speed was 371km/hr, previously the maximum speed 96 fighter made was 280km/hr. Aircrafts were about to play a main role at war.
I titled the cruelty of war for this article, because I suspect battleships were unnecessary white elephant at the beginning of that war. Simply they saved millions of dollars for the scrap of the battleships.
As to submarines, I didn't know that. From the experience they suffered from Untersee Boot, they might have learned the decisive effect and so kept almost all of them from the attack.
